Preschool sickness

As I sit here at my desk with my box of Puffs plus tissues and assorted cold remedies, etc....I'm wondering if, perhaps there is an answer to how long it takes a new to preschool child to build up the immune system.

First day back to work

It's been 12 weeks since both Mom2Mom and my little man, Cole, were born. I can't believe it. They say time flies when you're having fun - but I guess it's the same when your days consist of diaper changes, bottles, naps and giggling babies.

Today is my first day back at work. I decided to have a trial run for daycare so both Cole and I would have a little time to get used to things. That was a good idea because I got most of my tears out on Friday. Plus, I have enough to keep me busy and my mind off of things here today. However, it's early. Check back at noon to see how I'm doing.

Au Pairs in Hilton Head and Bluffton

I wanted to let anybody who's ever thought about hosting an au apair know about an incredible special that a local agency is running right now. AuPairCare is waiving the application fee right now (savings of $300 !) until July 7. This is a great affordable option for childcare (I pay about $300 a week for 3 children !!). With the special you can apply and look at the au pair pool for Free. I have hosted au pairs for many years for my three children and love the cultural experience that it brings into our home as well as the quality childcare that my children receive on a daily basis.

Bewitching hour

I've heard and read a lot about babies' bewitching hour - the time in the late afternoon or early evening where they are fussy. Well, my son certainly has that. In between his afternoon and dinner time feeding (somewhere around 6 p.m.), he just gets fussy and there's pretty much no way of calming him down. He might get distracted briefly with toys and a pacifier - but only briefly. I think part of it is that he's tired because he only takes a 30-45 minute nap, but I'm not quite sure.

Baby sunglasses

I'm on the hunt for a pair of sunglasses for my 2-month-old son. I want the ones that have the strap so they stay on. Anybody know where I can find those locally? If no locally, than online?

Island Playground

I finally brought Matthew to the Island Playground on Sunday and we had a blast! For thouse of you who haven't been there yet, it's really a terrific place. A place like this was really needed in this area. Thank you Thank you Thank you for opening it!!!

how to help

I'm reading so much about the economy in trouble, and we have felt it as a family...high gas and food prices, one friend losing her home to foreclosure, and uncertainty about job lay-offs. But in the midst of all this, I want to show our kids that the appropriate response is to extend a hand to others who are having hard times. It's hard to find a meaningful volunteer opportunity to do with preschool and elementary-school age kids. One that I've thought of is taking food to Bluffton Self Help, which is open Monday-Friday to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The joys of motherhood

I'm a new mom with a beautiful little boy who turned 2 months today. We've certainly had our challenges (trying to gain weight, acid reflux and finding some sort of routine), and there have been quite a few times that I wasn't sure if I was doing "it" right.

Looking for a Hour of Fun

My son's grandma takes him out twice a week on her lunch hour. We had been sending her to Frasier park in Bluffton...perfect for a hour outing..but now it's pretty hot out. We're trying the Bluffton Library next. I was looking for other ideas of things they can do in Bluffton that can get Grandma back to work in time. Any ideas out there? Thanks.

Sleeping through the night

We're trying to get our 8-week-old to sleep through the night. I know he's ready (and so are mom and dad) because when he does wake up it's at 4 a.m. on the dot every time. So we think it's more his internal clock than hunger that triggers him. I know there are several tips out there - just wondering what has worked for you guys.

He already sleeps through his late-night feeding (10:30 p.m.) sometimes so he technically sleeps 7 hours on occasion, which is nice. But I think he's ready to eliminate that middle-of-the-night feeding too.

Let me know what's worked best for you. Thanks!
