As many know this week is National Breastfeeding Week. I've been reading about other (larger) towns and the events they are hosting for this occasion. I got to thinking about these events and thought why couldn't Beaufort host something similar? If nothing else just a nurse in at the waterfront park? I know Beaufort Memorial wouldn't sponsor anything. They are too cheap to hire a LC on staff. They do have a IBCLC that they can call IF you request (I wonder how many moms know that??). Anyway, I think it would be a great way to get nursing (in Beaufort) in the news (maybe the GAzette could get involved)and maybe reach some Moms in the process. What do y'all think?

I think that would be awesome! I would participate! Beaufort needs to catch up with the rest of the United States. I know we have one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the US, which is very sad. I think more moms could stick with it if they had the right support.
Great! When would you like to meet? I agree...Beaufort is sadly lacking in the area of nursing! You know it's bad when they won't hire a Lactation Consultant, but have no problem handing out the big bags of formula for all the new moms! And their worried about people smoking on campus....priorities, I guess.

I would love to be involved in planning something in Beaufort, if not for this year, then definitely next...and not just for National Breastfeeding Week, but for general promotion in Beaufort.
A side note--I received erronous advice even from the IBCLC at Bft. Memorial. She was very unhelpful and if it weren't for my family's support, I would've quit nursing within the first 6 weeks. With the lack of support and general ignorance from many that I have encountered in the medical community, it is no wonder our success rates are so low.
There is a Le Leche League here. It's very small but I got great support from the meetings here. I know they would want to do something. At one point we even talked about getting some Breastfeeding bags made, like the formula bags given at the hospital but better. I didn't have such at bad experience at BMH, the nurses were helpful with breastfeeding, the trouble then started when I got home. I called the LC and I paid her to come to my house. I called her again and never could get ahold of her! That's when I went on line and looked up the local LLL. THAT'S where I got the support. I would love to get together with other moms who would like to organize something. I can meet most anytime! Carman
I looked up LLL and thought they were just in Bluffton? I would love to get involved with meetings, but I jsut can't travel that far every week and my husband works such long hours I would have to take my older children. That would be great if they could get a group started up here! KArsten
That's awesome that your family was able to help you out! My son was born in the middle of the night after a placental abrruption and my husband had to take the children and go home after I came out of recovery. I was by myself and wanting to see him, they said no...I wasn't allowed to go to the NICU, couldn't nurse, just go to sleep and we'll bring him to you if he's doing well in a few hours. To this day I regret taking their advice and not being more alert and cognisant of what was going on to put my foot down. I know if my husband had been with me he would have. I'm originally from Charlotte and know of several different organizations for nursing moms there. One is a nonprofit that just educates moms (they gear it more to the lower income families)about breastfeeding and supports the ones that are ongoing. I think something like that would be great for Beaufort County. Here's their link if your interested...http://bellasbreastfeeding.org. I know the Navy hospital has a breastfeeding coordinator and there is an oncall only LC at BM, but to have someone in town that you could call day or night or have regular meetings with would be great.
